We at POI are passionate about our research and the potential that it has to positively impact on wider society. We have embedded public engagement within the POI programme, and hope to develop lasting relationships with community groups towards the goal of informing and engaging the public, and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science and cancer research.
Our public engagement programme kicked off on 4th February 2020 with Choirs for Cancer, a World Cancer Day event which brought together 10 choirs and more than 300 singers, along with cancer patients, researchers, advocates, survivors and family members, in a moving community tribute to those whose lives have been touched by cancer. You can find out more about this event here.
Despite the pandemic bringing an end to in-person events, we are endeavouring to keep our public engagement programme running with a number of online webinars and events taking place throughout 2020. We are also participating in the 2020 Science on Screen programme in partnership with CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices at NUI Galway and Galway Film Centre, to commission a short scientific documentary focused on science and cancer research.
