We at POI are passionate about our research and the potential that it has to positively impact wider society. We have embedded public engagement within the POI programme, and hope to develop lasting relationships with community groups towards the goal of informing and engaging the public, and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in science and cancer research.
Our public engagement programme kicked off on 4th February 2020 with Choirs for Cancer, a World Cancer Day event which brought together 10 choirs and more than 300 singers. Despite the pandemic bringing an end to in-person events, our commitment to public engagement remained and we ran a number of highly successful webinar events including a discussion on lobular breast cancer with Dr. Damir Vareslija, a research webinar with Prof. Cathy Kelly and a public talk on neuroblastoma with Prof. Walter Kolch
We are also participating in the 2020 Science on Screen programme in partnership with CÚRAM, the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices at NUI Galway and Galway Film Centre, to commission a short scientific documentary focused on science and cancer research. We are also developing relations with minority communities in Ireland, with our Invisible Spectrum event now entering its second year. Further details of all these events can be found below.
